The thing about social media marketing is that it’s always changing. Technology is changing so fast that it’s pretty much impossible to keep up and “know everything”. If someone claims to be a social media guru, they’re not.

From my experience, approximately 50 percent of small business owners (mom and pop operations) are not tech savvy. Some are willing to learn and others downright refuse. {{Those are my perceptions from Maine. I’m curious to see if there is a difference in Florida. I suspect it will be the same.}}

If you plan to still be in business in 10 or 20 years, then you – as a business owner, as a marketer – need to learn about social media marketing.

Social media marketing can be very scary at first – especially when you don’t know what all the buttons do, where you are posting and who can see “things”.

Everyone has to start somewhere. The best thing I can recommend for newbies is to create a personal Facebook profile, learn the ropes and then venture into other social media networks. Another good place to start is LinkedIn.

Just about everyone is on Facebook (but you). You will find all types of people from all around the world. Facebook is like a community festival. The entire community attends – or in this case logs on. The audience is a mix of children, teenagers, young adults, adults and seniors – all with different income levels, gender, likes an dislikes.

LinkedIn is a business to business network and is comparable to a Chamber of Commerce event. The network is more about information sharing and less about socializing.

Which ever platform you choose to start with, make sure to download the smart phone application. If you do not have a smart phone, the you need to give in and go buy one. #ifyoucantbeatthemjointhem

I always say if you are serious about social media marketing then you will go buy a smart phone and get a Facebook account. If you are not serious about social media marketing, then just stop reading this blog. It’s pointless.

Back in the day, when people had a good or bad experience, they would tell their neighbors, their friends and their family. Today, they just jump on to Facebook or Twitter and start complaining or raving. They also rate companies and write reviews on sites like Google or Yelp.

Social media platforms are a catalyst for communication growth and reach. People are talking. Hey, yes they are sometimes talking to their phone – but on the other end of their phone is their network, their audience. And if they happen to be talking about your brand, then you need to be in that conversation. You need to be monitoring what’s going on out there and having great customer service. Reach out to people who are spreading the word about your company. Good or bad, it should be addressed.

And .. that’s all I have to say about that.

Social media is always newsjacking traditional media.

For those of you who don’t know what newsjacking is – it’s when someone reports newsworthy events prior to the mainstream news companies.

Anyone can view live reports from any event. You merely have to go to Twitter and use the search feature to find graphic uncensored user distributed content.

Once you search the subject you are looking for, pay attention to hashtags that are being used. You can then follow these hashtags to find more content.

Feel free to join the conversation by using relavant hashtags in your Twitter update, replying to Twitter users with your own thoughts and opinions or by simply retweeting content to your audience.

Also, if you have no idea what is going on, you can always look at what’s trending in Twitter and in Facebook. You will find lists of trending content if you look around.

I’d tell you exactly where it is on both Twitter and Facebook; but, buttons and features move around quickly on social media sites and all device dashboards are different.

If you want to stay up to date on what’s happening in the world, all you have to do is look at your smart phone.

Reduce Facebook drama by controlling what you see in your Facebook newsfeed.

Many people are not interested in seeing negativity in their Facebook newsfeed. You as a Facebook user has the ability to control what you see within your newsfeed. Below are instructions on how to unfollow Facebook friends so you will have a healthy online environment to socialize with your friends, family members and associates.

Note: When you unfollow your Facebook friends, their status updates will not show up in your newsfeed; and, they will not know that you have unfollowed them.

There are two ways to unfollow a Facebook friend.

You can go to your Facebook friend’s timeline and click on the “Follow” button which is located between the “Friends” and “Message” button.

You can also unfollow a Facebook friend directly from your newsfeed. When you see a status update you do not want to see, click on the downward arrow located to the upper right of the status update.

You will then have the below options.

If you still want to see your Facebook friend’s status updates in your newsfeed but don’t want to see that specific type of status update (i.e. negativity, swearing) then choose the “I don’t want to see this” option.

If you no longer wish to see any and all status updates from your Facebook friend, then select “Unfollow [friend’s name].

If you consistently unfollow Facebook friends, you will find less drama in your Facebook newsfeed.

There really is a secret formula on How to Create the Perfect Facebook Post. Here it is.

A perfect Facebook post consists of a few lines of copy – two sentences tops, unless your audience is heavily into reading – a picture, a link and a hashtag or two.

Copy: The point of the copy is to make the reader engages but liking, commenting or sharing. Shares are the best; however, likes and comments are good too. By increasing engagement your Facebook fans are more likely to see your status updates in their news feed. (Just trust me on that one; I’ll explain Edgerank at another time.)

Picture: The picture/graphic should grab your audiences attention. Usually images that induce emotions are best. Picture quotes are usually well received from all audiences and easy to find. If you are linking to a blog article or website, it is okay to take the image directly from the article page.

Original graphics are best; but, let’s face it – we don’t all have the skill or time to create our own graphics. You can find a lot of free stock photo out there. A couple quick stock photo sites are and

Link: Ideally and this is not always the case, you should link to a website (maybe yours) so the reader can find more information about the subject you are writing about. Just make sure this link is not long and messy. You can shorten your links via, and just to name a few link shortener websites.

Note if you add a link with no picture Facebook will automatically generate a preview of the link to include a picture, headline and a short description. This preview is generated from the website you are linking to; therefore, if the preview does not look as it should, it needs to be fixed on the back end of the website.

Hashtag: Many people are confused as to what a hashtag is – it’s the number symbol followed by letters or numbers with no spaces or punctuation that represents a topic/subject. You should not get carried away with putting too many hashtags in your Facebook status updates because it looks messy and unprofessional. Hashtags should represent the topic of your post and possibly the location. Use one hashtag at minimum and three at most – unless your selling hashtags of course!
