What is Gutenberg? And Why Should I Care?

I recently attended WordCamp Portland. Gutenberg seminars were strong. I honestly didn’t know there was a controversial WordPress update due to launch at the beginning of 2019. I decided to do a little research.

First of all ….

What is Gutenberg?

Gutenberg will be the default WordPress editor in version 5.0. Unlike the current WordPress editor, WordPress users will be able build their pages and posts by selecting from a variety of Blocks. Blocks will be use the drag-and-drop function and the what-you-see-is-what-you-get model.

What does Gutenberg mean for my WordPress website?

You should have a developer on hand to make sure the migration from your current WordPress version to 5.0 is a smooth transition.  You will inevitably have to upgrade to the new Gutenberg editor. Website developers and users alike should practice proactive and preventative actions.

What’s up with the name?

The new WordPress editor, Gutenberg is named after Johannes Gutenberg. Gutenberg was the first European to use movable type. At the time, movable type was not a new concept in Asia; however, Gutenberg modernize the printing technology to the format that is still used today.

How to I start using Gutenberg?

Gutenberg is currently still in testing; however, there is a plugin that you can download. Check out the Gutenberg plugin here. If you’re going to play around with Gutenberg, I would recommend working in a staging environment.

Should I start to use Gutenberg?

Since the new Gutenberg WordPress editor is still in beta testing, I think it’s fair to make sure you are knowledgeable about the product. If you’re a developer or an avid WP user, it would make sense to play around with the plugin a little. However, at this time, it’s more of a wait and see what happens approach. We’re not 100 percent sure when the new editor will be released. I’m sure the WordPress developers are working hard for an easy transition.

We’ll know more when we know. Until then, contact me if you want to sign up for our Gutenberg migration plan.
